Between 2021 and 2025, The Instant of Change developed as a research project at the intersection of art, design and material culture. Conceived by Luca A. Caizzi, the project brought together artists, designers, architects and companies during Milan’s Design Weeks, developing a series of exhibitions, collaborations and publications around the transformative potential of materials.
With The Instant of Change – Retrospective, Mo.1950 presents a comprehensive reading of the project, bringing together a selection of works produced over five years alongside the editorial archive that has accompanied its development.
Hosted at Mo.1950’s showroom on Via Molino delle Armi, the retrospective proposes a new reading of the project’s different stages, establishing connections between works, themes and forms of research that have investigated material as a medium of experimentation, interpretation and communication.

Each edition generated a dedicated publication, creating a parallel editorial history of the project. For the first time, the complete collection of five volumes is presented as an integral part of the exhibition. Rather than functioning simply as documentation, the books record the changing questions, artistic positions and material investigations that have shaped The Instant of Change.
The editorial dimension also informed the press kit developed for the retrospective. The five publications were gathered in a bespoke book holder, specially produced for the occasion as a tailored object for distributing and preserving the press materials. Conceived around the number and format of the volumes, it presents the collection as a coherent body of work, positioning the press kit between a communication tool, an archive and a design object.
The exhibition brings together works and interventions from the different editions, including contributions by Alecio Ferrari, Alessandro Furchino Capria and Finemateria, alongside the collective research developed through How Do Materials Taste? (2024) and The Sound of Matter (2025).
With The Sound of Matter, the project extended its investigation beyond visual and spatial dimensions, introducing sound through mixtapes by Marta Oliva and illustrations by Gabriele Zagaglia. The retrospective brings these different approaches into dialogue, highlighting how material can be understood not only as a physical component, but also as a cultural and perceptual medium.
The Mo.1950 material library is also integrated into the exhibition. Normally conceived as a resource for architects and interior designers, its renewed layout brings samples, finishes and surfaces into direct relation with the works and publications on display. Within the retrospective, the material library becomes a working archive and a space for considering the relationship between material research and contemporary architecture and interior design.
Over five years, The Instant of Change has created a platform for dialogue between artists, architects, designers and the manufacturing industry. The retrospective brings this research together within the Mo.1950 showroom, connecting exhibitions, publications and materials while presenting the project as an evolving body of work.
