The Material Connection

Material archives, artificial intelligence, and new forms of co-creation.

Presented during the Fuorisalone 2025, The Material Connection transforms the space of Mo.1950 on Via Carducci into an experimental environment where material research and artificial intelligence converge. Curated by LualdiMeraldi Studio in collaboration with Frag, Olivieri, and Carpet Edition, the installation investigates how digital systems can reinterpret the emotional and sensory dimension of matter.

At the center of the project lies an AI model trained through archival materials, visual references, and surface samples provided by the participating brands. Rather than functioning as a purely analytical tool, the system is invited to generate human figures in response to conceptual and visual prompts derived from the material libraries themselves. The resulting images occupy an ambiguous territory between portrait, memory, and abstraction, revealing outputs that escape total predictability and challenge conventional notions of authorship and control.

Textures, fibers, leathers, and finishes are translated into expressive visual identities, where the tactile qualities of materials appear reframed through human presence and gaze. The archive thus ceases to be a static repository and becomes an active narrative device—capable of producing new associations between physical matter and emotional perception.

More than a technological exercise, The Material Connection proposes a reflection on the evolving relationship between designers and intelligent systems. The installation suggests a mode of practice in which human intuition and machine processing coexist within a shared creative field, opening new possibilities for interpretation, collaboration, and material storytelling.
